President’s Message

Special Message from the President:

This message is for the younger members of the Fishing Creek Sportsman Association who are less than 60 years of age. The Club desperately needs your help in the physical aspects that the Club manages and participates in; i.e., Club maintenance work, manning booths, helping in sanctioned activities, etc. Most of the above work is being done by a disproportionately small group of members, and that group is aging and unable to continue as in the past.

For example, our most recent outing at Camp Victory, though very rewarding, was extremely tiring for the members in attendance, most of whom were over the age of 65. Although we love being at Camp Victory, without some changes, the Club may have to forego attendance altogether. And the same may have to be the rule if younger members do not volunteer to help. The Derby is coming up--we need younger help for this extremely tiring event.

WE NEED YOUR VOLUNTEER HELP.

For photos from the recent PA Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs Convention held in Clarion and some views from the recent time at Camp Victory, please visit our Photo Gallery.

There is a range work day scheduled for May 22 from 1:00-3:00 PM. All volunteer help will be greatly appreciated.

The time is quickly approaching for the Children’s Fishing Derby. It will be held on Sunday, June 2. Registration will be in the morning starting about 10:00 AM. Fishing is from 1:00 to 2:30 PM (come early to get a good fishing spot along the raceway). Any child from age 5 to age 12 is eligible to fish. As usual, any participating child will get a prize whether he gets a fish or not; the largest fish in each category caught will receive a special prize. Children younger than 5 can fish, but they will not be eligible for prizes. Hope to see everyone there. NOTE: We need club members to volunteer for setup and at the Derby--there is a lot to do. Stocking at the race for the Derby is at 9:00 AM Friday, May 31. Setup for the Derby starts at 9:00 AM Saturday, June 1. Pre-Derby setup begins at 9:00 AM on June 2 at the race.

We have for sale at the current time raffle tickets for the Children’s Fishing Derby. We also have the new 2013 limited edition patch, a very limited amount of last year’s patches, and (new this year) a key fob. Anyone wishing to have the patches and/or fob mailed to them, please send a check for $5.00 for each item and an additional total of $.50 for shipping and handling (for example, if you want 2 patches, the check total would be $10.50), a note of what is wanted, and your name and address to the Club P.O. box. Shipment should be in 2-5 weeks. Local pickup is available; please query the Club email address. Please note that a shipment of any more than three items will require additional shipping costs; please query the Club email with amounts BEFORE sending your check.

The Club in conjunction with the Columbia-Montour Tourist Bureau is tagging approximately 40 fish that will be released in the Fishing Creek watershed at popular public access areas. Each tag will have a dollar prize of $25, $50 or $100 and a phone number to call to receive the prize. A total of $2,500 in cash is being offered to the lucky winners. Here is nice Brown Trout with a $50 green tag located just beneath the dorsal fin. These are the same style tags that are often used by fishery research projects.

The public parking area along Little Fishing Creek below Eyers Grove is coming along slowly. Needed now is state highway access authority. Properties in Benton Township and Sugarloaf Township that are being bought out are being looked at for open space/fishing access by the Club. The Johnson Mill property in Orangeville is looking good for purchase as open space/fishing access. It’s going to take a large investment to purchase the approximate 45 acres. A combination of County and local groups for the promotion of open space have banded together in conjunction with Fishing Creek Sportsman Association to attempt to purchase this ground. It will probably take the balance of this year to finalize this purchase.

The Club has announced there will be one or two scholarships available for the Benton High School. They would go towards any outdoor- or agricultural-related college majors. The scholarship amounts are for $500 each. School students are encouraged to check with their guidance counselors for qualifications.

In conjunction with the Fish Commission and the Benton Archery Club, the Club will be co-sponsoring an archery elective in the Benton School District. See your Benton guidance counselor for further information. At the present time, our Club and the Fish Commission are on board. We are searching for additional co-sponsors. A school in process with the archery program is the Millville High School.

There is a continuing problem with abuse of the use of the range. Improper use of the backstops and targets results in major damage. Lack of cleanup after use of range results in damage to maintenance equipment. If the abuse or lack of adherence to range rules does not stop, severe consequences will have to be imposed. As of now, range use is positively limited to Club members and members of the local VFW post ONLY. Please note associate members of the post do not have any use privileges; full members ONLY are allowed use. Children of club members under the age of 16 are permitted when accompanied by adult member ONLY. Anyone over 16 must be a member of the club. There may be a range officer present during high usage days to verify club membership and adherence to the range rules. They will also be there during the rifle hunting season.

The Association’s Mission

Since 1969 the Fishing Creek Sportsman Association has been dedicated to preserving and maintaining great trout fishing on Fishing Creek and several other Columbia County waterways through the PA Fish & Boat Commission’s Cooperative Nursery Program and other related efforts. The Association consists of a group of like-minded sportsmen and conservationists concerned with the preservation of open trout waters and public fishing, primarily in Fishing Creek and its tributaries.
